This book foundation of social studies, it tries to x-ray some fundamental issues without which a study of social studies cannot have a good grasp of the discipline. According to Ogunsanya (1981:40) it defines social studies as the development of socially desired patterns of personal behavior and attitudes to life and people.
The aims and objectives of social studies
It makes the primary and secondary school student to know their values, norms, belief and to be good citizens in a society.
Social studies and social sciences
It means that it integrates some of the relevant concepts in social sciences, natural science and humanities while still maintaining a relationship with broader knowledge base.
Historical development of social studies
Social studies were therefore looked upon as the vehicle through which Africans would seek to improve the self-image of the people of the society after long period of colonial rule.
Foundation of social studies, help us to know more about AIDs/HIV, I learnt that HIV infected human through sexual intercourse, injection drug abuse, and transmission from mother to infant etc. the key to stopping transmission of the disease lies in the behaviour of individuals, by using sharp objects used by another person, through sexual intercourse etc.
This family life education, it help us to know the traditional idea that raising a large family is noble service to society is rapidly of too much bearing of children.
Population education, optimum population: optimum population may be defined as the population which is neither too small nor too large, but which when combined with the available resources and given the level of existing technology secure maximum returns per head. Drug education, according to Onyiaji (2004) “a drug can be defined as any chemical substance other than food which, when taken, can alter the psychological state of an individual”. These drugs essentially kill pains and in the process of doing of produce other minor effects.
Smoking of cannabis leads to accelerated heartbeat, high temperature and lowered blood pressure. The use of cocaine may suffer from high fever, headaches, loss of appetite and insomnia (sleeplessness). This will help to alert the youths of the dangers of indulging in drug abuse. We should also join hands in the war to fight out and involve everybody a long with the federal government in order to make our country in drug-face society.

To review this book, I understand that this book deals with foundation issues in social studies, the philosophical, and sociological and primary, secondary and tertiary institutions of learning and many of them like HIV/AIDS, population, family, life education and others where examine in this book.
There are two things I understand that the author bore in mind while writing this book. Firstly is the language consideration. The language is very plain and straight. Secondly it is meant a lot for Nigeria students.
Come to the definition of social studies, this book made it clear that social studies has many definition because of its dynamic nature but among the scholars that give definition they agree in one thing, they agree that social studies is concerned with man’s interaction with his environment and his efforts to successful adjust and live in his constantly changing environment.
In this book the author made it known that social studies come as a problem solving, author made known that many social problem where solved through social studies education.
Social studies come to be for many reasons.eg It come to be to solve our societal issues
It come to bring national unit
To heal wound of national war.
So to summarize, I understood that school of social studies is not concerned with the building of theories as its main goal; rather it integrates the already discussed theories to gain insight and wider perspective into the study of man and his efforts at influencing his environment.
