    In summary social studies is concerned with the study of man in his environment. It can also be referred to as one of the disciplines of social sciences which carries out a systematic study of man’s interactions with his fellow man on one hand and the interaction with his environment on the other hand.
    The aims and objectives of social studies should as a matter of fact be stated in recognition of problems of society which that programme is meant to serve and in the light of the country’s national objectives (Enem 2000).
    Understanding the objectives of Social studies at both the primary and secondary school levels helps one to appreciate how the subject can be used to solve some of the numerous social problems which afflict the Nigeria society.
    Social studies is not a combination of social sciences as many people tend to erroneously think. It has rather come to be seen as the “totality of experience, and understanding, a child gets when he has been exposed to course of studies based on man’s problems in his environment and the resulting ways of man’ (Nwosu and Corbin 1977).

    Family can be described as the most basic institution in all human societies. In the Nigerian society significant changes are taking place within the family group which is affecting the traditional role of an average Nigerian family.
