10 reasons for military intervention on politics
    1. Inordinate Ambition
inordinate ambition of the military is another reason why the military intervene in the political process. This ambition is sometimes personal to the individual officers and at times corporate
    2. Corruption and Political Development.
Corruption and Political Development Another great reason for military intervention in politics is political crisis in a country; like in the case of military interventions during the Cold War because the communistic regimes failed against capitalism and democracy. Corruption always weakens the government and results in high chances of military coups.

    3. Mismanagement
Another factor of military intervention in politics is mismanagement of funds meant for prioritized developmental projects.
The civilian politicians where accused of mismanaging such funds; this is usually due to the selfish ambition to become millionaires within a short period of time.
    4. Nepotism and favoritism
Nepotism and favoritism play prominent role in ushering in military into the political process of the state, in most cases, appointment and promotions under civilian government were not being carried out based on political qualification and experience, rather they were based on political considerations.
    5 Marginalization
When therefore an ethnic group feels highly marginalized by another or other ethnic group it can plan to change the status-quo through a coup."
    6. Political crisis
Political crisis is another salient factor that is adduced to be responsible for military intervention in the
breakdown of civil political order arrangements, which encourage the military to take over power.
    7. Political Development
The other set of variables that explains military interventions, although related but distinct from social and economic development in a certain extent, can be grouped under the heading of political development. Strong civilian governmental and political institutions, democratic values, and so forth can be indicators of political development level.
    8. The Centrality of Military
For the centrality of the military approach, the greater the resources and the cohesion of the military, the greater the likelihood of interventions are (Mayer and Burnett, 1977). One view emphasize the sectoral interests of the military, treating the military as a potentially parasitic institution which, given its centrality to the state's claim on legitimate violence, is prone to use this to dominate politically, and especially if civilian institutions are weak.
    9. Internal Conflict Based on Characteristic of the Society
The ethnic antagonism includes cultural diversity of groups, ethnic dominance, and ethnic competition as causes of military intervention (Jenkins and Kposowa, 1992). The ethnic and other sectional rivalries among militaries may result in military interventions, which are mostly related with structure of society. Internal conflict is often associated with linguistic and ethnic heterogeneity
    10. Regional Differences
    Some research on the coup d’Etat in Latin America and Africa brings regional perspectives based on the argument that in those continents the coups are more likely due to diffusion effect of traditional political culture of coups. From the literature given, these hypotheses can be derived;

    LEVEL: 200

    COURSE TITLE: NIGERIAN FOREIGN POLICY
    WHAT IS FOREIGN POLICY
A foreign policy, also called foreign relations or foreign affairs policy, consists of self-interest measures chosen by the state to safeguard its national interests and to achieve goals within its international relations milieu. The approaches are strategically employed to interact with other countries. The study of such strategies is called foreign policy analysis. In recent times, due to the deepening level of globalization and transnational activities, the states will also have to interact with non-state actors.
    THE EXAMPLES OF FOREIGN POLICY
Upon gaining independence in 1960, Nigeria quickly committed itself to improving the lives of the people of the country and harnessing the resources that remain vital to the economy of the country and her neighbours. By observing at what benefits and appropriate for the country, Nigeria became one of the founding members of the Organisation for African Unity (OAU), which later became the African Union. The Organisation for African Unity checks political stability of any African countries and encourages them to be holding regional meetings for the union. Nigeria backed the African National Congress (ANC) by taking a committed tough line with regard to the South African government and their military actions in southern Africa. Nigeria and Organisation for African Unity (OAU, now the African Union), has tremendous influence in West Africa nations and Africa on the whole. Nigeria has additionally founded regional cooperative efforts in West Africa, functioning as standard-bearer for ECOWAS and ECOMOG, economic and military organisations, respectively.
HOW HAS THE INFLUENCE OF DOMESTIC AND EXTERNAL FACTOR AFFECTED THE NIGERIAN FOREIGN POLICY TILL DATE
A thorough analysis of the factors affecting the formulation of Nigeria's foreign policy is necessary. It is important to begin by understanding the context in which Nigeria's foreign policy has been shaped. Nigeria's 55 year of independence have been characterize by two main phases of either authoritarian military rule or Democratic transitional civilian rule, with all the attendant characteristics and contradiction that this involves. Both Internal (domestic) and external factors have conditioned Nigeria's foreign policy formulation.

    REG.NO:16108314
    LEVEL: 200
    COURSE CODE: POL 223
    COURSE TITLE: NIGERIAN FOREIGN POLICY
    WHAT IS FOREIGN POLICY
Foreign Policy is defined variously by different thinkers and politicians. Some of the important definitions of foreign policy are as under. According to Professor Gibson: "Foreign policy is well defined comprehensive plan based on knowledge and experience for conducting the business of the government with the rest of the world".
According to Professor Joseph Frank: "Foreign policy consists of decisions and actions that involve to some appreciable extant. relations between one state and other" According to George Modelski “The system activities evolved by communities by changing the behavior of other states and for adjusting their own activities to international environment. According to C.C Rode: "A group of principles that is adopted by the states to protect the national interest and to change the behaviour of others."
Foreign May be defined as: "Foreign policy gives you confidence on the basis of that you try to interact with other states".
    THE EXAMPLES OF FOREIGN POLICY
A 1989 publication by the Federal Military Government, Four Years of the Babangida Administration, summarized the priority issues of Nigerian foreign policy: the abolition of apartheid in South Africa; the enhancement of Nigeria's relations with member countries of the European Economic Community (EEC), the United States, the Soviet Union, and with other major industrialized countries to increase the flow of foreign investments and capital into Nigeria; and continued support for international organizations, such as the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the Organization of African Unity (OAU), and the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM). Relations with other African states constituted the cornerstone of Nigerian foreign policy.
The Ministry of External Affairs was directly responsible for foreign policy formulation and implementation. Because matters were usually left in the hands of the minister and his officials, foreign policy positions could change radically from one minister to another, depending on the minister's orientation. In addition to the minister's immediate staff, there was a small foreign policy elite comprising other top government officials, interest group leaders, academicians, top military officers, religious leaders, and journalists. This elite exerted indirect influence through communiqués and press releases, as well as direct pressure on the government. In 1986 a conference--to which every stratum of this elite was invited--was held to review Nigeria's foreign policy and recommend broad policy frameworks for the 1990s and beyond.
HOW HAS THE INFLUENCE OF DOMESTIC AND EXTERNAL FACTOR AFFECTED THE NIGERIAN FOREIGN POLICY TILL DATE
Several factors conditioned Nigeria's foreign policy positions. First, the ethnic and religious mix of the country required cautious positions on some issues, such as policy toward Israel. Nigeria found it difficult to restore diplomatic ties with Israel and had not done so as of 1990 because of Muslim opposition and sympathy with the rest of the Arab Muslim world. Second, Nigeria's legacy as an ex-British colony, combined with its energy-producing role in the global economy, predisposed Nigeria to be pro-Western on most issues despite the desire to maintain a nonaligned status to avoid neocolonialism.

THE IMPACT OF MILITARY RULE IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF DEMOCRACY IN AFRICA
The military. Participants argued that, if the military is not transformed in the process of democratization, it would be difficult to have a dynamic civil society, because some actors would have an inordinate access to force: "The role of force in African politics must be examined. There are difficulties in affecting democratic transitions in Africa when there are people who can and are playing the ethnic game of winner take all with guns. Where such force exists, the nightmare scenario of societal fragmentation into a series of armed warlords, such as in Liberia and Somalia, can emerge." However, as argued by another participant: "The problem with all militaries around the world, and not just Africa, is how to control them—not their access to force."
As one participant characterized it: "The plague of military intervention in politics by coups d'état has descended on Africa since independence. As a matter of fact, the first coup in sub-Saharan Africa occurred in Togo in 1963, that is, three years after most states became independent." There was agreement that African militaries do not respect the boundaries of the barracks, intervene in politics less out of altruistic motives than for a host of personal reasons, and arrogate to themselves the role of prescribing national goals and ideologies. Some thought the military threat is more severe today than in prior periods because the large-scale militarization that resulted from the cold war competition. Participants agreed that the arms race in Africa left tragic results. For example, prolonged periods of warfare and collapsing economies have left large numbers of young men with no skills, other than warfare, and few opportunities for civilian employment, even if they had the skills. Participants argued that the presence of formidable military forces in newly democratic or democratizing countries poses an ever-present temptation for intervention: "All issues become much more difficult to manage when some actors have access to force. The real issue we face, then, is violence, as potentially exercised by the military." Although much discussion focused on the military, participants did not agree on how best to confront the military threat in African politics. (Various nonconsensual suggestions that were advanced are discussed below.)
In West Africa, there have been two categories of military coups d’état or military interventions into politics. The first of the two waves of military intervention coincided with the first two decades of independence, in the 1960s and 1970s when senior officers mostly masterminded military coups. Military Intervention into Politics 25 25Adekeye Adebajo, and Ismail O. D. Rashid, West Africa’s Security Challenges: Building Peace in A Troubled Region (Boulder, CO: Lynne Rienner Publisher, Inc. 2004), 147. Military coups that are provoked by a nation’s commanding officers are known as either Veto or Guardian coups d’état. On the one hand, the Veto coups d’état are prompted by social changes that directly threaten the interests of the military and its allies. Guardian coups d’état, on the other hand, are coups where the military intervenes in order to rescue the state from civilian mismanagement.26 The second wave of military coups d’état occurred in the 1980s and 1990s, and in contrast to the first wave, were in many cases instigated and led by junior officers or noncommissioned officers (NCOs).

    QUESTION:
MENTION AND EXPLAIN 10 REASONS FOR MILITARY INTERVENTIONS IN POLITICS
    1. Socio-Economic Development
The conclusion can be inferred that socio-economic status has a strong negative relation with the incidence of military interventions. One unit increase in socio-economic status of countries results in a .6 decrease on average in the expected value of coup when other variable in the model held constant.
    2. The Centrality of Military
Several students of military intervention have stressed the importance of internal characteristics of the military establishment in determining the extent and nature of military intervention. However, our findings regarding the correlation among the centrality of military institutions and military interventions do not support the previous studies since the findings can be negligible both substantively and statistically (Table.II).

    3. Political Institutionalization
Political institutionalization has a strong negative impact in preventing the military interventions in politics, as predicted. We conclude this since there is practically no chance that the incidence of coups and institutionalization of countries are not related (Table.II). An increase in the institutionalization level of countries results in a decrease on average in the expected value of coup when other variables in the model held constant.
    4. Economic Dependency and Regional Differences
There is little evidence that coups were caused by economic dependency. Maybe this debt-GDP is only one of the factors as such that explains out-dependence to a certain extent in terms of commodity concentration. It appears that there is statistically significant relation only between expected coups and Latin American countries. In other word, if a country is from Latin America is more likely to have a coup.
    5. Structure of Society
As the homogeneity of country increases, the expected value of coup increases slightly when other variables in model held constant, but it is not statistically significant Ethnic relations are notoriously difficult to capture in cross-sectional analysis. Our measures center on ratios between different groups in general population in terms of heterogeneity in language and ethnic and other groups.
    6. Corruption and Political Development
Another great reason for military intervention in politics is political crisis in a country; like in the case of military interventions during the Cold War because the communistic regimes failed against capitalism and democracy. Corruption always weakens the government and results in high chances of military coups.
    7. Conflicts based on issues in the society
These conflicts may include religious and ethnic problems; this happened in Nigeria during the first rise of Biafra. Nonetheless, it can still happen as Boko Haram and other terrorist organizations are a threat to the democratic regime.
    8. Firstly, the inordinate ambition of the military to hold sway of power was the major factor for military reign in Nigeria’s political atmosphere. This is an irrefutable fact.
    9. The military also saw the political instability of Nigeria as a reason to intervene at the various time they did. Truly, the polity of the Nigerian state was heated up at the various time coups took place. For instance, prior to the January 1966 coup, the people of the western region were in mess.
    10. Not that alone, electoral malpractices was one of the factors that largely engulfed the Nigerian state then. It is well known what electoral malpractices usually lead to. No political party can tolerate that.
